Chapter Eight

Kate rose with the dawn of a new day. The contents of her stomach rose with her. The flu forced her to crawl back into her bed, and it kept her there until noon on Saturday. Sunni had sent over homemade chicken noodle soup. Grace arranged for extra help in the boutique. Everyone looking out for her. Again. And Seth? Seth sent flowers with the cutest hand drawn note.

Sigh.

He needed to stop doing things like that. Her heart couldn’t take it. Her mind obsessed over it. And him. When she had bigger problems. Responsibilities. And an agenda she couldn’t afford to ignore. She ran a hand down her hip and slipped into her boutique. The hush of laughter, low conversation, and muted music calmed her nerves. This was what it was all about. Success. It was a scent she drew into her lungs.

Her cell vibrated from inside her day planner.

Tyler.

Meet me at Mary’s at 7?

She frowned. She typed back. Why?

Come on, Katie.

Sorry. Busy.

Let me say goodbye in person.

The bell over the door dinged, and Seth stepped over the threshold.

And…just…un-freaking-believable.

Seriously?

Again?

An ugly purple bruise bloomed along his cheekbone. Her sick feeling had nothing to do with the flu. Kate cocked a hip. “Please tell me you and Tyler didn’t get into it again?”

He blocked her with a question of his own. “How are you feeling?”

Oh, yeah. She was definitely meeting with Tyler. She typed a hasty confirmation. They had things to discuss. Like how she was getting tired of dealing with little boys instead of adults. She focused on the one in front of her. She tapped a foot. “Answer me.”

“Have I told you how much I love it when you order me around?”

Sexual innuendo coupled with sarcasm. Be still her heart. “And I don’t need a knight in shining armor. I need a man who knows how to keep his own counsel. One with some restraint.”

“Really?” He looked off to the side, feigning deep contemplation. “I don’t remember restraint being a requirement the other night.”

Unimpressed, she titled her head to the side and waited.

“TMI.” Grace hustled passed, coat and purse in hand. “And my cue to leave.” At the door she turned back. “Good luck with…whatever this is?”

Then she was gone, and Kate was alone with Seth. Only not in a good way, but in a frustrating, oh-my-god-you-did-not-just-say-that kind of way. “You do understand how juvenile that last comment was, right?”

“You do realize you’re talking to a flesh and blood guy, right?” he mimicked her. “Not a mannequin?”

Their night together seemed like ages ago. Almost like it hadn’t happened. She straightened her shoulders. “It’s not out of line to want you to stay away from Tyler, especially when this is the result.”

Seth crossed his arms. “But he puts bruises on you, and it’s out of line for me to want the same thing?”

Touché. But admitting she was wrong wasn’t happening. She lifted her chin. “The difference is you went behind my back over something that had to do with me. Not okay.
